The Acer Aspire EasyStore H340 lets you download multiple files or an entire folder from the NAS server to the remote computer. If you choose to download a folder, you have the option of downloading that folder in the form of a ZIP file or an executable file that will decompress the downloaded content for you. SATA Hard Drive SupportThe Acer Aspire Easystore H340 preinstalls a large 1TB hard drive, and supports installation of up to 4 HDDs for storage expansion. Instead, folders are simply duplicated from one hard drive to another.

It doesn't come with any backup software for Macs and has no support for Time Machine, either. To use the server to backup a Mac computer, you'll need to get third-party backup software. As the Acer Aspire EasyStore H340 is just another Windows computer, it's very easy to access its share folder by browsing your network with Windows Explorer. Unfortunately, unlike the HP EX495, the Acer Aspire doesn't offer any support for Time Machine.

Features

The Aspire Easystore H340 features 4 internal hard drive bays for easy storage expansion. If that isn't enough, there are 5 external USB 2.0 ports for external storage devices, printers and wireless networking. Or, if you want to go wired, there's a Gigabit Ethernet port. An e-SATA port is provided for high-speed external drives. This gives you redundancy or the ability to attach networked devices. The Aspire Easystore AH340-U2T1H features 4 internal hard drive bays for easy storage expansion.

There's no support for printers or a USB camera, unfortunately. There's also another USB port on the front that works with the server's one-button copy feature. Just plug a USB drive into this port and press the Copy button above it, and the entire contents of the drive will be copied onto the server's internal storage. This is actually a very neat backup feature that a lot of NAS servers offer. The front door swings open to expose four hot-swappable 3.5-inch drive bays, the bottom of which is occupied by a 1TB SATA hard drive. Drives can be added or removed without ever having to power down the server; you just pull out a tray, attach the drive, and slide it back into the bay.

The server is powered by Intel’s Atom 230 CPU, which is outfitted with 512KB of L2 cache. This chip has a core clock speed of 1.6GHz and a front-side bus speed of 533MHz. (That machine is based on a 2.6GHz dual-core AMD Athlon FX-60 desktop CPU.) And since the Acer doesn’t need a lot of fans to keep it cool, it operated in near silence. The server is housed in an attractive cube-shaped enclosure measuring 7.9 inches wide by 7.1 inches deep by 8.3 inches high.

The server comes with a Lights Out add-on preinstalled, which lets you configure the H340 to turn itself on and off at certain times of the day. You can download and install other add-ons, including a uTorrent plug-in which allows the server to download torrent files while your computer is turned off. It's when it comes to setting up the H340 that the benefits of the Windows Home Server operating system become obvious, as it's much easier to configure than most NAS devices.

The Acer Aspire EasyStore H340 is, at its core, a Windows-based computer powered by a 1.6Ghz Intel Atom 230 processor and 2GB of RAM. All it lacks is a mouse, a keyboard, and monitor support. That said, the server can be controlled from a second computer on the same network via its Windows Home Server Console or via remote desktop . The strength of Windows Home Server-based NAS servers lies in the fact that they are very friendly to Windows users. The hardware monitor can be configured to send out email alerts if its readings indicate that something has gone awry.

Similar to other windows Home Server-based NAS servers, it doesn't support any RAID configuration but uses the Folder Duplicate feature to protect data stored on it. The Acer Aspire EasyStore H340 looks like cube, with a smooth front where the access to the hard-drive bays are. Each bay comes with a removable tray that can host a standard SATA hard drive. The server comes with its first bay preoccupied by a 2TB hard drive that includes the operating system. If you want to expand for more storage or duplicate to protect your data, you can install more hard drives, either via the other bays or use an external hard drive to connect to the server's ports. Around the back of the H340, you'll find the Gigabit Ethernet port for connecting it to your router, along with 4 USB ports and an eSata port for hooking up external hard drives.

If you want to get it done remotely, can assist you with that. I have a normal (64-bit Win7) machine that I can plug in the OS HDD into if that helps at all. This item is covered by Newegg.com's Standard Return Policy. We would suggest contacting technical support in your region for further assistance with this issue. Sign up for an Acer ID and get exclusive access to deals and the Predator Den community, where you can ask and answer questions about gaming and gear.

The LED indicators on the front panel will flash, change colors and turn to solid blue after startup. After making sure that you have set up the system properly and connected all the required cables, you can now power on the system. All connections to other computing devices must be made using shielded cables to maintain compliance with FCC regulations. Do not overload a power outlet, strip or receptacle by plugging in too many devices. The overall system load must not exceed 80% of the branch circuit rating.

Unplug the power cord before removing the power supply unit from the computer. Install the power supply unit before connecting the power cord to the AC power outlet. I have FreeNAS installed on a Proliant Microserver so that's not an issue. It's whether or not I can repeat it on the Acer without 'big problems'. What happens then is that the H340 boots from the PXE recovery drive.

Equipped with Microsoft’s Windows Home Server operating system to help you centralize and connect your digital assets. Fast network performance in the home is delivered through a Gigabit Ethernet connection. The system can be powered using a wide range of voltages; 100 to 240 V AC. The power cord included with the system meets the requirements for use in the country/region where the system was purchased. Power cords for use in other countries/regions must meet the requirements for that country/region. For more information on power cord requirements, contact an authorized reseller or service provider. Do not locate this product where people will walk on the cord.

No obvious way to uninstall the McAfee antivirus software; no RAID support. At around $500 with 2TB of storage included (or $400 with 1TB), the Acer Aspire EasyStore H340 is one of the most--if not the most--affordable NAS servers on the market, in terms of how much storage you get for your money. It also offered fast throughput performance in CNET Labs' tests.

This product should be operated from the type of power indicated on the marking label.

However, the Atom-based NAS server doesn't come with any extra features, apart from what Windows Home Server 2003 gives you, which is already ample for most situations. To make up for that, you can add more hard drives to the Acer Aspire EasyStore H340's three empty bays without using any tools. It also comes with five USB ports and one eSATA port to host more storage.

This is fine as long as the bottom drive that contains the server software doesn't fail. If it does, you'll have to reach for the rescue disc, whereas, with most NAS RAID systems, you just replace the dead drive and the system rebuilds itself for you.
