Setting up the Acer Aspire is as easy as popping its included "Software Installation Disc" into a network PC and following the onscreen instructions. The setup process, which includes detecting the NAS in the network and installing the Windows Home Server Connector software, took us longer than expected, at about 20 minutes. The process bugged out twice for no specific reason and we had to do it again. The Aspire easyStore is plenty fast for most home applications, and its one-touch back-up feature is an excellent feature we’d like to see implemented on more servers. If you need to back up multiple PCs or just need a reliable server for a media-center extender, gaming console, or music-streaming system, we highly recommend you give this one a look.
One advantage of using UFS is that is is 100% conventional and is like whatever else youhave use, no new concepts to learn. But on the other hand ZFS is the biggest reason to go with FreeNAS. If you can't use ZFS then you might think about a Linux based NAS. But if you need ZFS then it is either FreeNAS or nas4free.

If you have an old router that doesn't support UPnP, you'll need to manually forward certain ports to the IP address of the NAS to make this work. Place the Aspire easyStore H340 Software Installation Disc in the optical drive of the client computer. If you have misplaced the disc, you can install the Windows Home Server Connector via the home server. After installing the Windows Home Server Connector on the first computer, use the Aspire easyStore H340 Software Installation Disc to install the Windows Home Server Connector on the computers you want to connect to your home server. Once installation is complete the Windows Home Server windows displays. Select the “On ” option button if you want to use Windows Update to automatically download and install updates for Windows Home Server, then click the Next arrow. After the components are installed, the Windows Home Server Connector installation starts to find and connect to your Aspire easyStore H340.

You can turn the streaming features on or off at the Windows Home Server Console's Settings page. The server supports virtually all popular digital content formats currently available on the market. We didn’t have a MediaSmart server that we could use for benchmark comparisons, so we used our home-grown server, instead. As we mentioned earlier, that system is based on an AMD 2.6GHz dual-core Athlon FX-60 desktop CPU. It has 2GB of DDR2 memory, a gigabit Ethernet interface, and three hard drives (two 750GB drives and one 1.5TB drive).
However, the Atom-based NAS server doesn't come with any extra features, apart from what Windows Home Server 2003 gives you, which is already ample for most situations. To make up for that, you can add more hard drives to the Acer Aspire EasyStore H340's three empty bays without using any tools. It also comes with five USB ports and one eSATA port to host more storage.

You simply connect it to your network via the Ethernet port on the rear and then run the software supplied on the CD-ROM. The software automatically finds the server, configures it for use with your PCs, and sets up automatic back-ups of your computers. The H340 also has a built-in Universal Plug and Play server for sharing media with other PCs, consoles and networked media streamers. The setup process of the connection was pretty simple, but if you don't have a Hotmail account, it will take a few minutes longer, as you will have to register for one first. Then, just type in the Hotmail account information and everything is set up for you, provided that your router supports the Universal Plug and Play protocol, which most of them do. Now you can remotely access the server from anywhere via the Internet by going to xyz.homeserver.com, where xyz is the name of your Hotmail account.
The server is powered by Intel’s Atom 230 CPU, which is outfitted with 512KB of L2 cache. This chip has a core clock speed of 1.6GHz and a front-side bus speed of 533MHz. (That machine is based on a 2.6GHz dual-core AMD Athlon FX-60 desktop CPU.) And since the Acer doesn’t need a lot of fans to keep it cool, it operated in near silence. The server is housed in an attractive cube-shaped enclosure measuring 7.9 inches wide by 7.1 inches deep by 8.3 inches high.
There's also an additional USB port on the front, along with a button marked 'USB backup'. Connect a drive or memory key to this port, hit the backup button and the contents will be copied across to a folder on the H340. The H340 performs a similar role to most network-attached-storage devices.
USB backup feature enables quick and easy backup of your data from a USB storage device. See “Using the one-touch USB backup feature” on page 91 for more information. If the system has multiple sources of power, disconnect power from the system by unplugging all power cords from the power supplies. They're all on the "Shared Folders" drive thing, spread out between the other three drives (at least, I think that's how it works...).
If you are not sure of the type of power available, consult your dealer or local power company. To avoid damage of internal components and to prevent battery leakage, do not place the product on a vibrating surface. Built-in installation unless proper ventilation is provided. Unplug this product from the wall outlet before cleaning.
Right-clicking on the icon allows access to the Windows Home Server. For more information about the system tray icon refer to “Explore the Windows Home Server icon” on page 105. “Access the shared folders on the home server” on page 81 for more information.
If power strips are used, the load should not exceed 80% of the power strip's input rating. If an extension cord is used with this product, make sure that the total ampere rating of the equipment plugged into the extension cord does not exceed the extension cord ampere rating. Also, make sure that the total rating of all products plugged into the wall outlet does not exceed the fuse rating. Never use it under sporting, exercising, or any vibrating environment which will probably cause unexpected short current or damage rotor devices, HDD, Optical drive, and even exposure risk from lithium battery pack. The only two programs I have installed are anti-virus and a media server, and those can be put back on easily. I tried a system cold installation on the eSATA drive but the H340 still does not boot from it.
It connects to your home network, and has space for four hard drives that can be used to centrally store your files, so they're accessible from any computer on your network. It can also be used to automatically back up the files stored locally on your PCs, and for sharing a printer that's connected to one of its USB ports. While most NAS boxes are built on the Linux operating system, the H340 runs on Windows Home Server. The Acer Aspire easyStore H340 is a home server that allows you to share files and digital media across your network while also providing an easy way to back up all your PCs. The version we received for testing, the H340-M, costs around £360 and comes with two hard drives preinstalled, offering a total of 2TB of storage, but a cheaper 1.2TB version, the H340-L, is available for about £310.
